How the New Tariffs are Affecting the Lighting Industry

Published: Oct 1 2018

The LED lighting market has been dominated by Chinese manufacturing.  The good news in this is that the price for LED fixtures keeps getting better but, on the downside, domestic lighting manufacturers have had to look closely at how they go to market.  One of the largest lighting manufacturers in the U.S. recently had to consolidate their operations, citing predatory pricing from China as the cause.

The lighting industry has remained mostly untouched by the trade war with China, but that is about to change.  Effective September 24th a 10% tariff will be imposed on LED lighting products imported from China, then on January 1st the tariff will jump to 25%.

How can CBT help?

  • CBT has many lighting lines manufactured domestically or in countries that are not impacted by the tariff.
  • Even though the cost will increase, many products will continue to be an excellent value even at 125% of the current pricing.
  • If you can make purchases in time, CBT can get the orders on the books before the prices are increased.
  • Unsure of where to start? CBT offers on-site lighting assessments to see where your plant needs upgrades most
